The project focuses on validating the performance of Philippine rice varieties with improved root system formation and assessing their interaction with optimized fertilizer management strategies under multi-location irrigated and rainfed environments. Specifically, the phase aims to further evaluate the stability and adaptability of advanced rice lines carrying the weg1 gene in support of Plant Variety Protection (PVP) application through exposure to diverse environmental conditions. It also seeks to determine the effects of varying fertilizer levels across environments, validate the influence of the weg1 gene on root development in succeeding progenies, and identify the optimum water and fertilizer management conditions for enhanced performance of rice lines carrying the weg1 mutation gene. It continues from the project implemented by the Philippine Rice Research Institute that studied molecular mechanisms and genetic determinants of root plasticity in rice.
