Renewable energy can potentially be a wise solution to reduce the dependency on fossil fuels, which cripples the operation of farmers and fisherfolks due to the high volatility of fuel prices.

In March 2026, the crisis in the Middle East disrupted trade and triggered global oil market volatility, which led the Philippine Government to declare the country under a State of National Energy Emergency. Due to this National Emergency, the farmers’ and fisherfolks’ ability to operate is heavily affected by the increase in the price of fuel. 

Farmers are burdened by the rising costs of mechanized services and transportation due to rising fuel prices. This challenge can cause delays in harvest, quality losses, and reduced earnings. Furthermore, farmers face pressure to secure a stable energy supply to sustain irrigation or mechanization at the critical stage of their production cycle. Additionally, fisherfolk face significant pressure caused by the rising cost and limited availability of fuel in their area, which results in a reduction in the number, duration, and range of their fishing operations. 

Sustainable Agriculture Mechanization (SAM) is the proposed response of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to the current challenge farmers are facing. It can reduce the dependence on fossil fuels by using renewable energy and efficiently using resources. FAO’s approach to SAM is highly applicable, as it takes into account the economic, social, environmental, and cultural dimensions. This approach is essential since it enables low-cost options and can improve the timing and precision of operations, reduce the number of field passes, and limit the losses of seed, fertilizer, and water. Therefore, leading to a more efficient production. As for the challenges faced by fisherfolks, FAO highlighted the importance of solar-powered cold storage, refrigeration, and ice production to reduce dependence on diesel and preserve product quality.
