The Seventh Global Environment Outlook (GEO-7), published by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), is the most comprehensive scientific assessment of the global environment to this day. It highlights the urgent need for transformative action to address interconnected global environmental crises, including climate change, biodiversity loss, land degradation, pollution, and waste. These crises are accelerating and threatening planetary and human well-being, while current global efforts remain insufficient to meet sustainability goals. GEO-7 emphasizes that immediate, coordinated, and equitable action is necessary to avoid irreversible environmental tipping points and achieve the objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and international environmental agreements.
The report highlights that transformative change must involve reshaping economic, energy, food, material resource, and environmental systems. It calls for collaboration among governments, non-governmental and multilateral organizations, the public, including Indigenous Peoples, civil society, academia, and professional organizations, as well as the private sector, to develop integrated and just solutions. GEO-7 also recognizes the importance of Indigenous Knowledge and values, such as reciprocity, collective well-being, and care for nature, as essential guides for sustainability transformations.
GEO-7 presents five interconnected solution pathways:
- Transforming economic and financing systems through sustainable investments, fiscal reforms, and inclusive financing.
- Implementing circular economy principles to reduce waste and maximize resource efficiency.
- Transforming the global energy system by expanding renewable energy, improving efficiency, and decarbonizing industries and transport.
- Transforming food systems through sustainable diets, regenerative agriculture, reduced food waste, and innovative food technologies.
- Managing environmental systems using nature-friendly solutions and incorporating Indigenous Peoples’ governance and care for living territories.
The report also emphasizes regional approaches tailored to local contexts, alongside the importance of strong governance, innovation, education, policy reforms, and collaboration to accelerate transformation. Ultimately, GEO-7 calls for bold and equitable action to create a sustainable future where economic prosperity, social well-being, and planetary health coexist.
