To localize sustainable development and uphold the principle of leaving no one behind, it is crucial to empower all individuals, especially marginalized groups such as youth, to participate meaningfully as active contributors rather than symbolic figures in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Localization of sustainability initiatives is a major priority for the coming years, as seen by the recent approval of the Pact of the Future by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), which emphasizes the importance of achieving the SDGs for all parts of society. Localization of the SDGs involves adapting the 17 SDGs to the local contexts of different regions, reflecting their unique socio-economic, cultural, geographical, and demographic realities.
A recent inter-agency policy brief titled “Inter-agency policy briefs on accelerating progress on the 2030 Agenda from local to global levels: The critical importance of SGD localization” emphasized that such localization is essential for unlocking the full potential of the SDGs. It identifies key benefits, including increased relevance and influence, facilitated monitoring and reporting, and enhanced collaboration among stakeholders. These advantages align with the principle of leaving no one behind, as inclusive engagement with all individuals allows for the discovery of innovative strategies and projects necessary for achieving the SDGs.
Youth continue to face challenges such as limited trust in their capabilities, restricted access to networks, and inadequate funding opportunities. Therefore, advocating for their meaningful inclusion is imperative, as studies have shown their exclusion can hinder SDG implementation. Addressing these barriers requires strategies that actively engage young people and provide capacity-building opportunities for those from diverse backgrounds. Investing in youth-led initiatives helps foster innovation and address local sustainability challenges. At the same time, intergenerational collaboration enhances the integration of experience and innovative solutions, advancing comprehensive efforts to localize the SDGs.
