Tilapia production in the Philippines is greatly affected by increasing water temperature especially during warm months of the year. One way to address the effect of water temperature rise in hatchery ponds is the application of shading.
The aquashade technology makes use of greenhouse nets built on ponds to provide shade during summer months, which reduces water temperature by as much as 40C and expects to enhance seed/fry production by more than 100% in both pond-based and hapa-based seed production systems. This technology gave an estimated ROI of 14% per breeding cycle and an estimated Payback Period of 7.3 breeding cycles or 1.5 years.
