The Philippine coco sugar industry can be aptly described as a “sunrise industry”. At present, the industry is at its growth stage and is expected to be increasingly important in the future. It has bright prospects both in the local and international markets. This high-value product has a very reliable niche market primarily those who are health conscious and diabetics. In order to address the issue of heavy dependence on traditional export products and markets, R&D on new processing products, tech transfer, and commercialization was identified as one of the recommended strategies under the PCAARRD 2005 Industry Strategic Plan (ISP) for coconut. The program aims to improve the coco sugar industry in Davao Region through the community-based STBF approach, compliance to requirements of organic certifying bodies, enhanced packaging and promotion, and upscaled processing facilities that conform to both local and international standards.
This project aims to upscale the application of S&T interventions through the establishment of community-based STBF on improving coco sap production. Specific Objectives: 1. Promote wider adoption of the recommended technologies on coco sap production through the community-based STBF modality; 2. Establish a Community Grower Group Management System; 3. Rehabilitate less productive/senile coconut trees; and 4. Enhance active participation and empower the community with the help of LGUs and local organizations in promoting the application of the recommended technologies.
