Involving Women in Climate Action for a Sustainable and Equitable Future

As seen worldwide, extreme weather events are getting more intense as a result of climate change. These extreme weather events impacted millions of people, like the heatwaves in Europe, parts of China, and the United States of America, flash floods in North-East Bangladesh, and droughts which put Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia at risk of hunger.

While climate change affects everyone, not everyone is affected equally relating to gender, social and economic factors. It affects women especially those from poor and vulnerable communities.Ā

Empowering women in climate change adaptation and mitigation can help people adapt to the consequences of climate change. Women in Yap, Federated States of Micronesia, plant palm trees on flooded taro patches to weave cloth, build houses, and protect coastal from flooding. Meanwhile, the development of the first community-driven ocean zoning plan in the Caribbean to balance economic, conservation, and cultural uses while supporting the use of sustainable ocean resources for current and future generations has been led by Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson and other Barbuda council and partners.
