Mountain products can significantly improve the livelihoods of the communities and strengthen their local economies. MPP initiative is a certification and labelling scheme based on environmentally and ethically sound value chain approaches. Short, domestic value chains are encouraged while ensuring transparency and trust between producers and consumers, fair compensation for the primary producers, agrobiodiversity conservation, and preservation of ancient techniques.

MPP provides technical and financial support to small-holder mountain producers in developing countries, enabling them to establish businesses, enhance marketing skills, and improve the value chains of mountain products, including organic food, textiles, and tourism services. This assistance aims to boost livelihoods and promote sustainable economic development in these communities.

Currently, the MPP initiative operates in 8 countries and encompasses 20 products. Approximately 10,000 farmers have already received assistance, with 6,000 of them being women. This gender distribution is notable, as young men often migrate from the mountains to urban areas for employment.
