PSA Reports Decline in Fisheries Production in the Second Quarter of 2023

In a special release by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), fisheries production decreased by -11.3 percent in the second quarter of 2023.

Fisheries production reached a total volume of 1,082.22 thousand metric tons (MT) in the second quarter of 2023. This shows a decrease of 11.3 percent compared to the 1,219.94 thousand MT produced in the same quarter of the previous year. Commercial fisheries, marine municipal fisheries, and aquaculture subsectors recorded an annual decline in production while inland municipal fisheries subsector reported an annual increase in production.

The estimated production volume for commercial fisheries was 235.23 thousand MT, 234.90 thousand MT for marine municipal fisheries, 573.85 thousand MT for aquaculture, and 38.23 thousand MT for inland municipal fisheries subsectors. The aquaculture subsector has the largest share to the total fisheries production, with 53.0 percent.

For the 20 major species, a decrease in production was mainly noted in skipjack or gulyasan (-49.3%), milkfish or bangus (19.1%), seaweed (-4.9%), fimbriated sardines or tunsoy (-42.2%), and yellowfin tuna or tambakol/bariles (-23.2%). Meanwhile, an increase in production in round scad or galunggong (30.1%) and tiger prawn or sugpo (0.9%) was reported.
