UNDP Vietnam, in collaboration with ISPONRE and other stakeholders, developed Vietnam’s first comprehensive technical guidelines for implementing Payment for Ecosystem Services (PES) for wetlands and marine ecosystems. These guidelines aim to support sustainable resource management and conservation financing.

Vietnam has developed its first technical guidelines for implementing PES for wetlands and marine ecosystems. Led by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Vietnam and the Institute of Strategy and Policy on Natural Resources and Environment (ISPONRE), the guidelines were finalized through consultations with protected area management boards, experts, and relevant stakeholders.
Ecosystems such as wetlands and marine environments are essential for livelihoods, economic growth, and climate resilience. Despite their importance, these ecosystems remain undervalued and are often overlooked in policy and planning processes. Implementing PES policies for these ecosystems not only offers essential financial support for biodiversity conservation but also plays a critical role in increasing stakeholder awareness of the economic importance of these natural assets and the urgency of their protection.
The completion and implementation of the technical guidelines are anticipated to have wide-ranging benefits. The PES mechanism will improve ecosystem restoration and biodiversity conservation, open up new conservation funding sources, encourage economic growth, and improve local livelihoods. Most importantly, PES establishes definite financial incentives for businesses and communities to actively engage in environmental protection.
Successful implementation of the PES policy for wetlands and marine ecosystems will enhance sustainable national development by integrating economic value into environmental policies and raising community awareness about resource conservation.
