Biology and reproductive patterns of corals

The reproductive patterns of 18 coral species in Luzon, 13 coral species in Visayas and 11 coral species in Mindanao were assessed while the monthly record of reproductive status of 11 broadcast spawning coral species (i.e., Favites abdita, F. colemani, Acropora hyacinthus, A. valida, A. millepora, A. gemmifera, A. humilis, A. digitifera, A. latistella, A. muricata, and A. tenuis) were completed including the planulation pattern of 10 brooding coral species (Pocillopora damicornis, P. verrucosa, Seriatopora caliendrum, S. hystrix, S. guttatus, Styllophora pistillata, Porites cylindrical, P. nigrescens, Isopora palifera and Heliopora coerulea) to contribute to the reproductive biology of Philippine corals. Baseline information on the Symbiodinium diversity of several candidate resilient coral species was also determined. Altogether, these are essential for developing technologies for coral sexual reproduction.Ā
