The Philippines is advocating for a shift from the traditional linear economic system of “take-make-dispose” to a circular economy aimed at promoting resource recycling, minimizing waste, and fostering resilience. This approach is crucial for the country, where resource depletion and waste are significant concerns.
Government support is essential, including clear regulatory frameworks and financial incentives for companies to adopt circular business models. The transition would be economically feasible, particularly for small and medium enterprises, if tax breaks, grants, and subsidies were provided to businesses that invest in renewable technologies, design for recyclability, or reduce waste. Public awareness and education are also vital, with an emphasis on the importance of consumer behavior in circular initiatives.
Dr. Enrique Oracion, Director of Research and Development at Silliman University, emphasized the need for collaboration between municipalities and private organizations to establish recycling and resource recovery systems. Replicating pilot waste management programs nationwide can strengthen the Philippines’ circular economy and its role in Southeast Asia’s sustainability efforts.
