Genome analysis and establishment of germ cell cryopreservation for Philippine native pig

The PCAARRD Governing Council approved a Three (3) year project titled ā€œGenome analysis and establishment of germ cell cryopreservation for Philippine native pigā€ headed by Dr. Lerma Cajuigan-Ocampo of Department of Agriculture- Philippine Carabao Center (DA-PCC)

The project established a boar semen cryopreservation process in a feasible work environment “COLD ROOM set up” under local laboratory circumstances by preserving native pig germplasm in form of frozen sperm egg cells and embryos at cryogenic temperature at the DA-PCC PCC Animal Genetic Resources Cryobank Research facilities in Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecija.

The project aims to conduct genotypic characterization of Philippine Native Pigs (genome analysis) and compare with those pigs in other countries for a more efficient selection of target native pig genetic resources in the Philippines for cryobanking, and to establish a workable cryopreservation procedure specific for native pig sperm and egg cells genebanking/cryobanking .
