Research interest in microplastics has risen due to their occurrence and potential health risks/implications. However, In the Philippines, only a few studies were conducted regarding the microplastics ingestion (i.e. bivalves and mussels) in the commonly consumed seafoods. There is still a need for more research which can contribute further understanding of this global pollutant, and possibly address solutions/or mitigations. Hence, this research proposal will serve as an exploratory study on the detection of microplastics found in milkfish, a major species farmed in our local aquacultures. The spatial distribution of identified microplastics in milkfish found in freshwater, marine and brackishwater systems will be covered in this work. Results from this study may provide identification and correlation of possible sources and distribution of microplastics in fish at different water habitats.
