In a special release by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), fisheries production decreased by 5.1 percent in the third quarter of 2024.
Fisheries production reached a total volume of 0.97 million metric tons (MT) in the third quarter of 2024, a decrease of 5.1 percent compared to the 1.02 million MT produced in the same quarter of the previous year. Production declined in commercial fisheries, marine municipal fisheries,Ā inland municipal fisheries, and aquaculture subsectors.
The estimated production volume for commercial fisheries was 210.85 thousand MT, 196.13 thousand MT for marine municipal fisheries, 512.47 thousand MT for aquaculture, and 46.26 thousand MT for inland municipal fisheries subsectors. The aquaculture subsector has the largest share of the total fisheries production, with 53.1 percent.
For the 21 major species, a decrease in production was mainly noted in roundscad or galunggong (-17.2%), big-eyed scad or matangbaka (-23%), milkfish or bangus (-6.9%), seaweed (-1.5%), and yellowfin tuna or tambakol/bariles (-18.6%). Meanwhile, an increase in production in skipjack or gulyasan (18.9%), P. Vannamei or putian (19.4%), bigeye tuna (40.1%), blue crab or alimasag (9.5%), and threaded bream or bisugo (7.2%) was reported.
