S&T Community-based Nursery, Plantation Establishment and Management of Giant Bamboo (Dendrocalamus asper, Schult Backer) in Dalwangan, Malaybalay City, Bukidnon – ERDB-FWRDEC

Giant bamboo, identified as one of the ten commercially important bamboo species in the Philippines, is a large, dense-clumping species native to Southeast Asia. It grows up to 20 meters tall and 12 centimeters in diameter and is valued for its culms used in construction and shoots used as vegetables. In Bukidnon, itā€™s utilized for various purposes, including engineered bamboo products.

PCAARRD has highlighted improved management practices for bamboo in their strategic plans. The 2018 FIESTA event increased farmer interest in bamboo due to its potential benefits. To support the bamboo industry, there is a need for focused science and technology activities, particularly through community-based nurseries and plantations. This approach aims to enhance productivity and profitability, ensuring a stable supply of raw materials for the industry and promoting sustainable benefits for local communities.
