Far Infra Red Drying System and Compact Ultra Impeller Rice Mill are in the upscaled testing stage to address the concern in drying and milling process which are high losses (5.8%) with the existing drying method and low milling recovery.Ā
The Compact Impeller Rice Mill developed by the Philippine Center for Postharvest Development and Mechanization or PhilMech that uses impeller instead of rubber roll for its hulling operation is suitable for village-level operation and capable of producing both good quality brown rice and milled rice with higher rice mill recovery rate.It is compact yet powerful with input capacity of 300-350 kg/hr.. Milling cost using the said technology is estimated at Php 1.21/kg output which is lower compared to prevailing milling fee of Php 1.75 to 2.50/kg output. It is designed to be used by the farmers in the countryside using engines as its source of power. According to Dr. Michael Gragasin of PHilMech, over 20 units of the said technology were already sold while 40 units are to be procured by PhilMech under the RCEF program.
