Project 2. Utilization of aquatic plants as immunostimulants for freshwater eel culture
The project has assessed the bioactive components of azolla and kangkong extracts. They found out that azolla has a high amount of tannins and saponins. The inhibitory effect was also evaluated against Vibrio sp. Both azolla and kangkong inhibited the growth of Vibrio cholera, V.Ā harveyi, and V. parahaemolyticus. The immune response of freshwater eels fed with the diet supplements has no adverse effect and contributes to the better growth performance of freshwater eels. It also improves the immune response and disease resistance against Aeromonas hydrophila.infection. For the cost effectiveness, it has been found that the use of these extracts as a potential feed supplement in the eel diet as economically feasible could be of great help in the eel aquaculture industry.
