Coffee micropropagation

Somatic embryos ready for transfer to Plantlet

Producing more good quality beans starts from planting good quality planting materials that are high yielding.Ā  To produce true-to-type varieties, CvSU conducted initial activities to optimize the somatic embryogenesis protocol as a tissue culture technique for rapid and massive production of NSIC- registered Arabica and Liberica cultivars.Ā  Multiplication by somatic embryogenesis permits production of relatively uniform plants on a massive scale in a shorter period, and with a narrower genetic base than those under the conventional methods of propagating from seed or by vegetative cuttings.

The program Smarter Approaches to reinvigorate Agriculture as an Industry in the Philippines (SARAI) has also developed the suitability maps for Arabica and Robusta coffee using the following data as inputs:Ā  data elevation model, slope, soil. Temperature, rainfall, and climate type.Ā  The decision criteria for the suitability are based on growth requirement of the crop as indicated in published literature, i.e. The Philippines Recommends for Coffee.
